The mother of two girls, now 12 and 18, Barker was faced with endless loads of laundry. "I started to make them do their own laundry, but everything would be shoved in laundry baskets or folded horribly," she said.

To help her daughters fold their clothes quickly and uniformly, Barker cut out a cardboard box with three panels to fold clothing in thirds one way and a bottom panel to "flip" them in half the other direction.

"It became a new game for them," said Barker, who cut out a new cardboard guide every week because they were wearing out so fast.

One day her oldest daughter, Kristen, came home from school with a big idea. "She said 'I learned about patents today, and you should really patent this.'" Barker recalled.

So she researched a way to replace cardboard and masking tape with plastic and hinges and took steps to get her patent. Then she rallied her husband, father, sister and daughters to help make 200 Flipfolds to bring to a Las Vegas tradeshow, where they sold out in one day at $60 each.

Barker's next big breakthrough came when an acquaintance in the accounting department at Sports Authority convinced the director of store operations to give Barker five minutes of his time. Barker in turn convinced him to buy Flipfolds to cut down on the time employees spend folding.

Today, less than five years after crafting the cardboard prototype, Barker says she's sold hundreds of thousands of Flipfolds. While large retailers use Flipfold to speed up the folding processing, such stores as Target and Eckerd Drug Store now sell them to the retail market (for about one-fifth the original price).

"When I started Flipfold I didn't think it would get as big as it did," said Barker, adding that the company was profitable after six months. "I'm happily surprised."

In fact, business has been so good that, Barker admits, her days of worrying about piles of laundry are long behind her. She's practically famous. "Now people come up to me and ask if I'm the Flipfold lady," said Barker.
